The place where the women were "husband"


Plateau of West Sumatra, Indonesia is home for the Minangkabau tribal groups - where matriarchy still exist,  women are ruler, decided everything, the men only is guest in wife's family .

According to legend, mid 12th century,  Maharajo Dirajo king, who founded the Koto Batu kingdom , died and left 3 kids and 3 young wife. The First wife, Puti Indo Jalito, taught the children and governing kingdoms, opened the way for a matriarchal society in West Sumatra until today.


Here, people under schools of spirituality, worship the natural elements, Hinduism and Buddhism. Pawang is who used mind to heal for people, they have the ability to predict the future and communicate with the spiritual world.

According to local tradition, the groom to the bride's home to live with her family. Bride 's family prepares  dowry for the young couple, and this gift will be based on education level and occupation of the groom.


During the wedding, everyone will play instruments called gandang tambua (a drum). The girls will dance to welcome the groom new home.

In the family, the woman has the right to decide everything. They control land, assets and resolution of all disputes and plays a major role in the discussion of marriage. Men earn money to care for and raise children. They usually go out to work to earn money and go home occasionally. Of course, they had no say in the internal issues.


 According to legend, the king of Majapahit Empire in Java declared war on the Minangkabau. The head of the land of Sumatra has requested each other appoint a buffalo to fight, instead of actual war. Minangkabau's buffalo had victory. Hence, the name is dubbing Minang (victorious) and KABAU (water buffalo). This is also why the roof ,furniture and women's headgear shaped like a horn.
