Tribe living on yaks in Bhutan

The Brokpa people  in Bhutan breed yaks to take fur for weaving traditional costumes, make rain hats, make to tents and tarpaulins ,for milk and butter daily.

Brokpa are a tribe living in the two villages of Merak and Sakten outback of eastern Bhutanese . This is place where there is fog shrouded and lying at the foot of the Himalayas.


Broka people came from Tshoona, Tibet, and subsisting on the animals. They have been living in the border areas close to Arunachal Pradesh, India for centuries depend on farming yaks, sheep and some other animals. Yaks, sheep are raised for fur weaving wool and meat.


However, in recent years, the Kingdom of Bhutan is on the development,  Brokpa  people are affected.
Photographer AJ Heath was in Bhutan to work in 1 year, and one of his projects is coming the Merak and Sakten village and see Brokpa tribal  .

AJ Heath spent two weeks in order to live with the villagers and the implementation of  photos about four main ethnic groups in Bhutan. Heath said: "Almost all visitors to the village in one night or  4-5 days, so the villagers are very surprised and curious to see me stay longer."
Brokpa people living by breed because of the high ground, the conditions are not suitable for growing crops.


One of their special accessories are hats from yak fur. It is designed to avoid the rain for your face when attaching curls.
Heath said: "Most people I photographed were invited me to drink tea with milk and a few cups of Ara (a local drink)". Despite living in the wilderness and backcountry, people Brokpa glad, excited to be photographed.


"The Bhutanese friendly, likes to be photographed. Not too many places in the world where people say" thank you "for being photgraphed," Heath said. However, he is very cautious to not affect them. Heath stays in the Brokpa people home to easily learn, travel and meet people.


Caring Yaks  is a important work of Brokpa tribe. Only bullock and cows have been harvested feathers. In summer, people Brokpa emigrated because they often move around to find better places for grazing.


The life of Brokpa tribe depend on their animals very much. Costumes, woolen caps  made of yak hair, even their tents made from wool, but today they used plastic more.


Yaks also have an important role in the diets of Brokpa  ,. Not just meat, they milked to drink. They can drink dozen cups of tea (made from yak butter) daily.


As a special lifestyle of Brokpa, landscapes in here  also attracted to the artists. He said: "It's a combination of dense forests, the largest glacial valleys and vast grasslands."

A new road is going to be built here will make their life easier, reducing dependency on yaks and sheep farming.Heath has recorded image about commodity procurement appear in the village. The goods wrapped in plastic bags slowly changing their lifestyle and their diet.

However, the import and use of these items will make them discharge the waste that is not biodegradable. Moreover, when travelers everywhere come here, culture and traditions will be threatened.
